Dr. Brian A. McDowell has been practicing podiatry in the Sacramento area since 1975. He and his wife have three children and five grandchildren. Originally from Boise, Idaho, he moved to San Francisco after graduating from the College of Idaho to attend the California College of Podiatric Medicine, where he graduated in the Top 5 of his class and was a member of the Pi Delta honor society. He then fulfilled his internship and residency, specializing in podiatric surgery, following his graduation.
He has been active in his community and his philanthropic interests have included serving as a Boy Scout leader, a volunteer podiatric physician for long distance endurance runs, a podiatric physician for the San Francisco 49ers while they were in summer camp in Rocklin (whereby he was able to acquire donations for various charities), a sponsor for local sports teams, and a caregiver at free clinics.
His numerous professional affiliations include being the past President of the Sacramento Valley Podiatry Society, past Chief of Podiatry at Mercy San Juan Hospital, and current Surgery Executive Committee member at the Greater Sacramento Surgery Center. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, California Podiatric Medical Association, and the Sacramento Valley Podiatry Association. He is also a Diplomate in the American Board of Podiatric Foot and Ankle Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and a Fellow of the Association of Extremities Nerve Surgeons.
In addition to his past service on the faculty of the California College of Podiatric Medicine, he is currently an associate professor at the new medical school located in Elk Grove, California.
His technical expertise is enhanced by the investment in the latest in innovative equipment and techniques, which are utilized daily in his office, and at the surgery centers, to treat a variety of foot and ankle problems. Dr. Brian McDowell is also sought after as one of a handful of podiatric experts in the latest treatments for pain and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. His additional training in the field has led to his speaking and teaching about the subject from coast to coast. He has written numerous articles on foot and ankle surgery and was the first to develop the laser technique for fungal toenails.
The podiatrists at McDowell Podiatry Group have had years of experience evaluating and treating many different foot and ankle problems. We are capable of providing a number of services to provide relief from heel pain, plantar fasciitis, neuropathy, bunions, ankle pain, foot pain, ingrown toenails, warts, and fungus toenails. In 1930, Ernest Robert Meissner founded his industrial sewing machine business in the Los Angeles area. At the time, California’s garment industry was booming, with more than 900 manufacturers and 28,000 workers. Thanks in part to the movie industry, California fashion has always found plenty of buyers and its garment industry flourished until the lure of cheap foreign labor drew many manufacturers overseas.
Keeping the garment industry humming was the company’s main focus when Ernest’s son William (Bill) came into the business. Bill moved the business to Sacramento in 1958, where the family lived upstairs from its Victorian storefront between 20th and P Streets. The industrial side of the business continued to prosper as Bill and Myrtle Meissner expanded into the home-sewing business, gaining a loyal base of customers throughout the Sacramento area.
When Bill Meissner retired in 1982, Jim took over the family business, moved the company to its current headquarters at Business 80 and El Camino Avenue, and erected the giant needle and thread. Today the company’s needle in the sky serves as a Sacramento landmark and a testament to the Meissner family’s more than 85 years in the sewing business.
